Seize Opportunity Only When It Is Presented

Kuzushi, as it is known in martial arts, is the act of unbalancing ones opponent.

Kuzushi is an essential principle in which a martial artist must create an opening in order to win against their opponent. However in Kendo, the kuzushi may not be a wise move.

You see Kuzushi would be what we call a "needless attack", in which by recognising there is no opening, a Kendoka impatiently creates an opening even when there is none to be made. Towards younger or more inexperienced Kendoka, this may work to your advantage. But eventually as you grow and as you fight more experienced Kendoka, you will begin to understand that there is a difference between creating an opportunity, and an opportunity presenting itself.

If anything, to a more experienced Kendoka, having an opponent attempt kuzushi, would be your opponents very downfall. For if you were to practice proper Kendo, proper kamae, reaction and technique, there is no "Kuzushi" that you will not be able to break.

In conclusion, one must not be impatient when faced with hardship. One must be patient and await opportunity to present itself.
